wimbledon wines

Game, set, match!

With Wimbledon kicking off tomorrow, and the temperatures finally on the rise, what should you be drinking over the next two weeks?

Here are my top three sparkling picks:

Pretty in pink

Strawberries and cream a huge part of the fabric of the All England Lawn Tennis Club, so you’ll be in need of something to help wash it down. My suggestion is a sweet little number from northern Italy. The grape? Brachetto D’Acqui. Don’t worry if you’ve never heard of it – few people have – what’s important is that it tastes like strawberries, and there really couldn’t be a more perfect match (see what I did there… Ok, I’ll stop now).

Try out this example from Sainsbury’s Taste the Difference range. It’s a complete steal at £5.

A floral favourite

What’s more quintessentially English than elderflower? If you’re in need of a light refreshment, rather than reaching for the classic Pimms, you can make up a wine spritzer with some elderflower cordial, topped with with a large splash or Prosecco and a sprig of mint.

Keeping it British

And finally, to toast the winner it has to be Nyetimber Classic Cuvee. This English sparkling wine producer has recently released a new vintage, which is just as deliciously drinkable as the previous one. It has crisp, fresh flavours of citrus, green apple and a hint of a crumbly digestive biscuit. Truly scrumptious.

Find the Nyetimber Classic Cuvee at Waitrose or Majestic.

So that’s the booze sorted. Just sit back, relax and enjoy the tennis. Come on Murray!
